Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout is on the cusp of a significant return to the field. The 32-year-old standout is beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake City, starting Tuesday night. This move marks a critical step in Trout’s journey back from a torn meniscus in his left knee, an injury that has sidelined him since April 29.
Trout underwent surgery on May 3 to repair the meniscus tear and has been diligently working towards recovery. This past weekend, he took batting practice at the Angels' spring training facility in Tempe, Arizona. The return to the batter’s box is a promising sign for the three-time MVP and 10-time All-Star, whose career in recent years has been hindered by a series of injuries.
An Injury-Plagued Career
Trout's battle with injuries is well-documented. Last season, he was restricted to just 83 games due to a broken hamate bone in his left wrist. The previous year, a back injury kept him off the field, and in 2021, a calf strain limited his appearances to just 36 games. Prior to his latest injury, Trout was batting .220 with 10 home runs this season.
This litany of injuries has limited Trout’s time on the field but has not diminished his enthusiasm or the Angels' hopes for his return. Ron Washington, a notable figure in the Angels' organization, shared his optimism about Trout’s rehab progress. "Hopefully that's another progression he's making, and we can have him back," said Washington.
Rehab Assignment in Salt Lake City
Trout's rehab assignment will see him initially play as a designated hitter before resuming his role in center field. The goal during this stint is for him to play seven innings on defense, gradually easing him back into his usual duties. This isn't the first time Trout has donned the Salt Lake Bees' uniform. He previously played 20 games with the Bees in 2012, where he boasted a .403 batting average with one home run and 13 RBIs over 77 at-bats.
The Angels are proceeding cautiously with Trout's rehabilitation, ensuring that he is fully ready to return to the major league lineup. Washington emphasized the measured approach, stating, "I don't know exactly when, but let's see how it goes in Salt Lake City and then make a call from there."
Trout's excitement about returning to play is palpable. "I've been talking with him every day. He's excited about every progression that he makes, and he can't wait to get back, and we certainly can't wait to have him," added Washington.
Looking Ahead
As Trout embarks on this crucial step in his rehab, both fans and the Angels’ organization are hopeful for his successful return. His presence on the field as a central figure in their lineup is eagerly anticipated. While the exact timeline for his return to the majors remains uncertain, Trout’s commitment to his rehabilitation and his promising progress offer a glimmer of hope for a brighter, injury-free chapter in his illustrious career.
