C.J. Stroud Prepares for Second Season with Confidence
As the Houston Texans gear up for the new NFL season, all eyes are on C.J. Stroud, the No. 2 overall pick who has emerged as the franchise's cornerstone quarterback. Entering his second training camp, Stroud carries a fresh wave of confidence derived from both his rookie-year accomplishments and the significant offseason additions to the team's roster.
An Impressive Rookie Year
Stroud's first year in the NFL was nothing short of remarkable. Leading the Texans to an AFC South title and achieving a playoff victory, he shattered numerous franchise records, including passing yards, touchdowns, completions, and attempts. His stellar performance earned him the title of Offensive Rookie of the Year and made him the youngest quarterback in NFL history to win a playoff game.
Reflecting on his journey, Stroud shared, "Definitely a little more confident just knowing how training camp works, the reps I'll take." This newfound assurance comes from the experiences and lessons learned during a demanding rookie season. "Going with the ones. Last year, I really didn't know that until the very beginning of the regular season," he added, highlighting his progression from an uncertain starter to a definitive team leader.
Heightened Responsibilities
With a successful rookie campaign behind him, Stroud is now focused on refining his skills and elevating his leadership role within the team. "There's a ton of things. Owning the offense more, the operation. Putting more on my plate with run checks and protection checks, things like that," he explained.
As the Texans aim for greater heights this season, Stroud emphasizes the importance of setting a high standard for the team. "Right now it's just trying to not only build the camaraderie, but also be a leader with the first team so the second and third and everybody who's watching that this is the standard. It's up to me to set that standard and I have to do that every day," he said.
Building Towards a Super Bowl Dream
The offseason saw the Texans strengthen their offensive arsenal with the additions of wideout Stefon Diggs and running back Joe Mixon. These strategic moves have bolstered the team's standing, making them a favorite to win the AFC South. With these new weapons at Stroud's disposal, the Texans' ambitions extend to a potential Super Bowl LIX appearance.
Despite the heightened expectations, Stroud remains grounded and focused on the present. "The message is just keep the main thing, the main thing. Of course, we have not only a lot of expectations, we have a lot of big goals on this team. That's how it should be," he asserted.
Stroud's philosophy centers on confidence, preparation, and execution. "You know, the person that always doubts himself will probably never make it, so you have to have confidence and a goal and a plan and execute that plan," he stated. This mindset is crucial as he navigates the complexities of leading an NFL team amid intense scrutiny and pressure.
Focus on the Present
In the immediate term, Stroud is concentrated on the day-to-day grind of training camp. "Really you need to be where your feet are. We're in training camp right now. We've got to just execute that and making sure we're taking every day to get better," he emphasized.
With the regular season looming, the Texans' focus is clear. "You win, you move on, so that's the goal from start to finish," Stroud concluded, encapsulating the team's overarching objective.
As the Houston Texans prepare for a pivotal season, C.J. Stroud's journey will undoubtedly be a story of growth, resilience, and ambition. With a blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned savvy, Stroud is poised to lead his team into a new era of success.
