Commanders' Training Camp Week 2 Recap

As the Commanders' training camp advances into its second week, the atmosphere is charged with excitement and anticipation. The sixth practice session, notable for its third day with fans in attendance and the second in full pads, showcased an impressive roster fine-tuning their skills, particularly in red-zone scenarios.

Jayden Daniels has been a focal point, sharing first-team reps with veteran Marcus Mariota. Highlighting his capabilities, Daniels connected with Olamide Zaccheaus on a deep route up the right sideline during an 11-on-11 drill. He continued his streak by targeting Jahan Dotson along the sideline and executing a solid toss to Terry McLaurin up the opposite sideline. During the final team session, Daniels demonstrated his red-zone prowess by finding Dotson again and completing a touchdown pass to tight end Zach Ertz. However, his practice was not without flaws, as he experienced a bungled handoff with Jeremy McNichols and missed a series of throws in succession.

Offensive lineman Brandon Coleman displayed versatility by playing with both the first and second teams at left and right tackle. He faced off against seasoned defenders like Dorance Armstrong Jr., Dante Fowler Jr., and Clelin Ferrell. Coleman reflected on his learning curve: "There's always like three points in my brain that I'm telling myself in the next period if I didn't do it well. Like today, it was my hands were pretty bad in the first period. I was like, 'Work on my hands, work on my balance, keep my chest up.'" He also noted the complexity of defensive line techniques at the professional level compared to college, emphasizing the importance of staying relentless until the whistle blows.

Receiver Tremayne redeemed himself after an early drop by making two downfield catches from Mariota. On the defensive side, Mike Sainristil has been omnipresent, cementing his role as a starter and contributing to the return game. His approach to the game reflects his determination: "Part of it is just my play style. I'm a guy that's gonna go hard until the whistle's blown. And then the second part of it is just getting myself to make that second nature for me, so that when it comes game time, I don’t even have to think about stuff like that."

Jer'Zhan Newton, tasting first-team reps for the first time during this camp, made an impact by forcing McNichols to cut back on a play, showcasing his defensive acumen. Additionally, K.J. Henry and Javontae Jean-Baptiste made their presence known with significant contributions during practice.

Kicker Ramiz Ahmed delivered a flawless performance during the team portion of Tuesday’s practice. His consistency was on full display as he converted every field goal attempt, including an impressive 51-yard shot that had ample distance.

Among the consistent performers, Jahan Dotson has been a standout. His growing comfort on the field is evident: "I feel like I'm just getting more comfortable, and that's enabling me to play faster and faster. That's been a big emphasis for me." Dotson's reliability has been a key highlight in camp, providing a promising outlook for the team's offensive capabilities.

As the Commanders' training camp progresses, the focus remains on honing individual skills while fostering team cohesion. Each practice session brings forth new challenges and opportunities, with players like Daniels, Coleman, Sainristil, and Dotson leading the charge. The commitment and intensity demonstrated by the squad indicate a promising season ahead, full of potential and determination.
