The Philadelphia Eagles' acquisition of former New York Jets offensive lineman Mekhi Becton in May has set the stage for some intriguing developments in the team's roster. Dubbed as a backup for established tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton's role has evolved into a potential starting position at guard—a position where the Eagles currently face some uncertainty. This comes after Landon Dickerson's absence due to personal reasons and a lacerated toe.
A New Role for Becton
Becton's journey in Philadelphia began with expectations to serve as a reserve tackle. However, the Eagles' plans quickly shifted, placing him in the much-needed role of guard. His transition to this new position hasn't been without challenges. Becton has had to adapt to the faster pace of the interior line. "Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with," Becton explained. "Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It's right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away."
Despite these challenges, Becton has shown promise in filling the gap during mandatory minicamp at left guard and is actively competing for the starting right guard spot against Tyler Steen in training camp. Yet, he admits that the switch isn't particularly hard. "It's an adjustment, but it's not a hard adjustment. I can do it," he said confidently.
Injuries and Opportunities
Becton's time with the Jets was marred by injuries and inconsistent play. His tenure in New York was, by most standards, rocky. Nevertheless, the Eagles saw potential in Becton to shore up their offensive line depth. Since joining the Eagles, his health and performance will be closely monitored as he transitions to the guard position. Training camp and the upcoming preseason games will be critical in assessing how well he adjusts and performs under pressure.
While he is yet to play at right guard, Becton remains undeterred. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready," he stated. This readiness has already paid dividends as he stepped in seamlessly for Dickerson during minicamp.
Learning and Competing
Becton's adaptability and eagerness to learn are key traits in his development. "I just learn from everybody all day every day. It's a fun thing to do," Becton shared. This attitude could serve him well as he navigates the complexities of his new role. The experience of playing tackle, where one has a bit more reaction time, offers Becton a different perspective that he can bring to the guard position. "At tackle, you got a little bit of time to see what [the defense] is doing. You have time to figure out if you're in the right spot or not," he said.
One notable advantage Becton has is his impressive arm length, which he believes gives him an edge over typical defensive tackles. "I feel like I don't really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that," he commented. This physical attribute could become a significant asset, enabling him to better manage the close-quarters combat required at guard.
As preseason approaches, Becton remains focused on proving he can handle the demands of whichever position the team needs him. "If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," he said. This adaptability, coupled with his eagerness to learn and impressive physical attributes, paints a promising picture for his future with the Eagles.
The Road Ahead
Becton's role with the Eagles will become clearer in the coming weeks. The coaching staff's confidence in his ability to fill voids at the guard position speaks volumes about his potential impact. As he competes with Tyler Steen and awaits Landon Dickerson's return, Becton knows the importance of staying ready for any opportunity that comes his way. "I don't know what I'm gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever."
Becton's journey with the Eagles is just beginning, and the upcoming training camp and preseason games will be crucial in determining his role. Whether he emerges as a starter or continues to provide depth as a backup, his readiness and adaptability will be key to his success.
