Matt Riddle Teases MMA Return in 2024 Amidst Wrestling Success

Matt Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA in 2024

Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestling star Matt Riddle is contemplating a sensational return to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition in 2024. At the age of 37, Riddle has been actively engaging with various combat sports organizations, though specifics of these discussions remain under wraps.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has hinted at potential offers on the table for Riddle from both bare-knuckle fighting promotions and the Professional Fighters League (PFL). With his last foray into the MMA arena being a bout against Michael Kuiper for Titan FC back in February 2014, fans are eager to see if Riddle can bring the same level of athleticism and charisma back into the cage that he has displayed in the squared circle.

Riddle's Mixed Martial Arts Journey

Riddle's tenure with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) ended on a contentious note in 2013 after a four-win streak, which included a notable victory over Che Mills. However, two of those wins were later overturned due to Riddle failing drug tests for marijuana, leading to public criticism from UFC President Dana White. Despite the rocky end to his UFC career, Riddle looks back without bitterness, acknowledging White's role in inadvertently raising his profile.

"I have to thank Dana, because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," Riddle reflected. "Putting me on blast and doing that, I think a lot of people could relate with me. They probably had their parents or their boss talk to them like that. I think that's kind of where that 'bro' character kind of started."

Currently a free agent, Riddle's transition from MMA to professional wrestling was seamless. After beginning his training in 2014, he made his debut in 2015 and quickly ascended through the ranks of various independent promotions, capturing several titles along the way.

Success in Professional Wrestling

In 2018, Riddle's wrestling career took a significant leap forward when he joined WWE NXT, where he secured the NXT Tag Team Championship with Pete Dunne. His momentum continued as he advanced to the main roster and captured the United States Championship in February 2021.

Perhaps one of his most memorable contributions to the sport is forming the popular tag team "RK-Bro" with veteran superstar Randy Orton. Together, they clinched the Raw Tag Team Championship twice, cementing Riddle's status as a versatile and charismatic performer.

Despite his wrestling success, Riddle maintains a close connection to his combat sports roots, practicing martial arts multiple times a week. His dedication to the discipline is evident in his attainment of a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu—a testament to his skill and commitment.

Riddle's Future Prospects

Riddle's presence at high-profile boxing events, such as the Jake Paul vs. Andre August match in Orlando, suggests his interest in combat sports remains strong. He spoke candidly about his future in fighting, displaying a pragmatic yet open-minded approach to a potential return to MMA.

"There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," Riddle told MMA Junkie. "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon."

With his pro wrestling career still thriving, Riddle contemplates the possibilities that lie ahead, whether it be another fight in the octagon or continuing to entertain fans in the wrestling ring. "I never say never," said Riddle. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge."

Reflecting on his departure from the UFC, Riddle maintains a sense of pride in his achievements and an eagerness for new challenges. "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he said. "I did good [and am] still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"

As Riddle weighs his options, the combat sports community watches with anticipation. Whether he steps back into the cage or continues to dominate the wrestling world, one thing is certain—Matt Riddle's competitive spirit is far from diminished.
